"Pavlin" Orphanage Students at IANS

On April 22, 2017, children from "Pavlin" Orphanage visited IANS office at the invitation of IANS Director General Mr. Mikhail Kizilov.

The young guests felt like real pilots on company’s lab benches, sat at the controls of airplane and helicopter simulators and tested the ATCO control panel. The children were so excited to be able to control the heavy aircraft they would not leave the steering wheel.

The Orthodox orphanage “Pavlin” was re-established in 1999 at the Mitrofan of Voronezh's Temple to continue the pre-revolutionary tradition of shelters under the tutelage of Prince Petr Georgievich Oldenburg and Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fedorovna who were members of the Moscow Council of Orphanages belonging to the Empress Maria Feodorovna's institution. The shrine of Saint Mitrophan itself was built for the orphan children by the treasurer of all the orphanages Mitrophan Semyonovich Grachev.

The word "pavlin" derives from Latin "paulus", small. The heavenly patron of the Orphanage is Saint Paulinus of Nola, who cared greatly for orphans during his lifetime. Initially the shelter worked both as an orphanage and a children’s home. Here 350 children have been fostered and helped. In October 2004 the social rehabilitation center was transformed into its current form. At "Pavlin" orthodox orphanage children stay up to the age of 18 and can live on, as ‘older siblings’ or ‘seniors’, while continuing their education in colleges and universities.
