IANS Received US Patent for Wake Vortex Flight Safety .

IANS employees S.V. Alekseev, N.A. Baranov, A.S. Belotserkovsky and M.I. Kanevsky have received US patent No. 9,466,220 B2 for the method and on-board system for ensuring the minimum longitudinal separation distance under wake turbulent conditions.

The proposed separation method will boost the capacity of airports and increase the safety of air operations, taking into account the wake vortex turbulence - one of the most dangerous atmospheric phenomena and a frequent cause of flight incidents the latest of which happened in January 2017.

A small business jet Bombardier Challenger 604, carrying 9 people on board, was on the route over the Arabian Sea when the crew saw an Airbus A380-800 which was 300 meters higher. After passing under the A380, the Bombardier crew lost control of the aircraft as a result of encountering the wake turbulence from the A380. The Bombardier went into an uncontrollable roll making five revolutions around its longitudinal axis and stalled. The business jet lost some 10 000 feet before the autopilot was cut off and both engines flamed out. The crew managed to manually restore the control and restart the engines.

When the Bombardier hit a complex spatial position, the aircraft hull experienced exceptionally large G-forces, and some of the people on board were seriously injured. After the aircraft was stabilized, the crew decided to go to the alternate aerodrome in manual piloting mode. The airplane received airframe damage beyond repair which led to a total write off.
